This lecture will show how Goethe’s Novella makes use of contemporaneous discourses in the sciences to reformulate and rethink established concepts about the effective force of speech. Apart from Goethe’s Novella, the lecture will engage with those of Goethe’s scientific writings that develop models and theories of force, especially his writings on physical and chemical forces in his geological studies. I thus hope to show how a model of mutually interactive forces in nature, which is not restricted to organic nature, ultimately becomes the model of force for poetry.
