Luca Alexander Arens

Before joining the department in 2019, Luca graduated summa cum laude from Amsterdam University College with a B.A. in Media Studies and Art History, having spent a semester at NYU Gallatin on a Holland scholarship. After graduation, he worked as a research assistant at the German Center for Art History in Paris.

At Columbia, he plans to investigate the transmedial constellations of German polymath Alexander Kluge, with a particular focus on his post-2000 literary work and film installations, the media theory they imply, and the model of temporality they project.

General interests include media archeology, game studies, the representation of and challenge to postcolonial power relations articulated by contemporary visual art and literature as well as their complex relationship to finance capitalism and digital economies.
