THE FAMILY SINGER

This course examines the work of one of Yiddish literature's most esteemed literary families, who include a Nobel prize winner among them - a laureate who many Yiddish critics consider to be less talented than his older brother, and, perhaps, less adventuous than his sister.  In comparing these three writers' contributions to several genres and on several themes, we may be able to advance some notions about the merits of literary biography, of the workings of genre construction, and, of course, to look at the insights of several of Eastern European Jewry's most talented observers.
