Christopher Thomas Hoffman

Before joining the department to pursue a doctorate in German Studies (with certificate in comparative literature), Chris received a BA in History and Comparative Literature from Northwestern University.

Chris's research focuses on modern German and French philosophy, political thought, and literature. Loci of his interests include aesthetic modernism, social and political philosophy, psychoanalysis, and empire. His dissertation, entitled "The Poetics of Contemplation," studies the retrieval of the contemplative life - the thoughtful, not to say antisocial, retreat into reflection and intimacy with oneself - among a group of twentieth-century writers and philosophers.
